Acne: An Approach Where Where Western Medicine Meets Eastern Medicine

Four Main Causes of Acne:

1.       Follicular hyperkeratinization
Follicular hyperkeratinization, which is cause by dry skin, appears as the small little skin colored bumps on the skin that can occur by themselves, evolve into, or along with more cystic type acne. Many factors can contribute to this including: dehydration, climate change (including switching to and from using A/C), and even the soap you use or a change in soap. Most soaps and cleansers tend to be too drying and lead to Follicular hyperkeratinization.

2.       Increase in Sebum Production and/or sweat
Increase in Sebum Production and/or sweat can be caused by a number of factors, and can “clog” the pores leading to blemishes like blackheads (when dirt is also clogged), and can also trap in bacteria which can lead to cystic type acne. Increases in sebum can occur from over drying of the skin, often from cleansers, so the body attempts to balance the dryness with more secretion. Hormonal changes can also change how much sebum and sweat we produce.

3.       Bacteria
When bacteria overgrows on the skin, or gets clogged in the skin porse, it causes irritation which can cause red blotches or blemishes on the skin, and if enough bacteria is present to get the attention of the immune system to create pus, we get white heads and cystic type acne. Keeping a careful balance of a clean face, but not over drying as described above, is very important. Other factors, such as food allergies, or systemic infections like fungus and yeast can also contribute to bacterial imbalance and overgrowth.

4.      Inflammation
Inflammation is irritation in the skin which can lead to the problems described above or aggravate them further. Changes in hormones, environment, and many other factors can increase the inflammation in our skin to cause or aggravate acne.

We can use Chinese Medicine to balance and eliminate these problems:

1.       Follicular hyperkeratinization:
 According to Chinese medicine, dryness in the skin occurs when there either isn’t enough blood to nourish the skin, or it is not flowing well enough to make it to the skin. With acupuncture and herbal medicine, we can build the blood up and increase your blood circulation to ensure that your skin is being nourished properly to prevent follicular hyperkeratinization, balance out the skin and treat acne.

2.       Increase in Sebum Production and/or sweat: In Chinese Medicine, there are two main factors that cause this, one is hormonal imbalance, and the other is a little bit more difficult to explain. In Chinese Medicine, the lungs and the skin are closely related. It is said that the lungs control the skins ability to open and close the pores. While this concept is more difficult to explain in Western terms, one example that you can clearly see the correlation is when you see someone who smokes a lot of cigarettes, they tend to have very poor skin – it’s as if the skin can act as a reflection of the lungs’ condition. There was also a recent study released by the American Academy of Pediatrics showing “Skin age as an indicator of Lung age” in fetal development. With acupuncture, and Chinese herbs, we are able to help restore hormonal balance, and help restore proper function of the lungs to prevent and treat acne caused by increases in sebum and sweat.

3.       Bacteria: Acupuncture is excellent at regulating the body’s immune function to help combat bad bacteria and restore bacterial balance in, and on, the body. Furthermore, Chinese herbs can be taken to kill off the bad bacteria to hasten the results and help to clear the skin quickly.

4.       Inflammation: Modern research and diagnostic tools have allowed us to see acupunctures’ instant ability to reduce inflammation in the body. Stomach 36 – Leg Three Miles– This point is located a hands width (four fingers, not including the thumb) below the knee cap and one finger width away from the bone on the leg. Applying pressure at this point increases the circulation to the GI tract which is a sysem that gets deeply impacted by stress. Have you ever had gas or bloating, or changes in your appetite from stress? This is why! By pressing on Stomach 36, you help your GI tract to fight back from the stress and help to resume normal function. This point also helps to give a boost of energy which can be very helpful during times of stress. To activate this point, apply pressure and even do a little firm massage on the point for about 1 minute, multiple times throughout the day, especially after a meal. 
Large Intestine 4 - Union Valley– This point is located in the webbing between the thumb and the index finger, pressing to get “underneath” the second metacarpal bone, so you would press at an angle like you were trying to get to the center of your palm. Stimulating this point helps to relieve muscle tension and pain, especially those resulting from stress. This is one of the most used acupuncture points because of how effective it is at alleviating a plethora of symptoms. Often used for headache, neck, back, and shoulder pain, and overall stress in the body. To activate press firmly in the manner described above, this point will elicit a deep ache, which is an indication that you are accessing it properly. Massage for about a minute several times throughout the day, especially when muscle tension or pain is present. Avoid using this point while pregnant as it is a point we use acupuncture on when attempting to induce labor. 
Liver 3 - Great Rushing– This point is located in the webbing between the big and the second toe, follow that hollow towards your ankle until you fall into the meeting place of the two bones. Applying pressure on this point helps in unblocking the meridians and maintaining smooth flow of qi and blood throughout the body. This point is coupled with Large Intestine 4 to create the “four gates” which is a point combination used in acupuncture to move qi and blood throughout the body. When we are stressed, we block blood flow which can cause a number of different symptoms including pain (like the pain and tension you get in your neck and shoulders when you’re stressed). This point, especially when coupled with Large Intestine 4 is great at helping to move the blood and alleviate the pain. 
Pericardium 6 – Inner Pass – This point is located three finger widths proximal from the palm on the forearm in the center, which is between the two large tendons on the forearm. This point has been researched showing its effect on the vagus nerve, which is part of the parasympathetic nervous system. Some people, when under stress, will exhibit anxiety symptoms like an increase in heart rate or even heart palpitations, when you feel your heart racing or pumping very hard. The vagus nerve is responsible for this sensation as well as other symptoms associated with stress like dizziness or light headedness, changes in gastric function etc. That is why this point is so good for stress because it can inhibit cardial vagal activity, which basically means it reduces the activity of the vagus nerve to reduce that feeling of “fight or flight” and encourages deep breathing to help you to feel better quickly. Press on this point firmly between those two tendons, you may feel a slight “electrical” sensation to your palm, this is the activation of the median nerve, if this sensation is uncomfortable, lighten your pressure. Use this point for anxiety, heart palpitations, and even nausea from stress, motion sickness, and pregnancy. 
Use these points at any time to help to relieve your symptoms of stress. 1 Nutrition

o   Intake of salt should be restricted to 1-2 grams per day, as excessive of salt will increase the severity of edema.

o   Diet with restricted protein is recommended to reduce proteinuria and lower the stress on the kidneys. A high protein diet is discouraged since it accelerates the deterioration of kidney disease by increasing the intraglomerular pressure and urinary protein excretion.

o   Vitamin D supplementation is encouraged in patients with clinical or biochemical evidence of vitamin D deficiency.

o   Lotus nodes are recommended to be included in the diet.

o   Avoid smoking and drinking. Do not eat sour and spicy foods. Avoid caffeine or overwork.

4 Kinds of Pain from 8 Hours in front of the Computer

In our daily life, our computer is inseparable from us, whether at work or home. The computer has brought us revolutionary changes and has made our daily life much easier. However, computers also create new diseases such as “Mouse Hand”, neck pain and discomfort in the eyes. Computer Hand due to Excessive Use of Computer
 Hand and wrist pain due to excessive use of computer known as Computer Hand, a form of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). CTS is caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. The symptoms include tingling, numbness, weakness, or pain of the fingers, hand and wrist.

As a high risk group of the disease, computer workers and those who use computers, intensively need to do the following exercises to reduce the risk: extend the wrists, stretch the thumb, clench the fists, push palm against each other. These movements can improve the circulation of the muscles and tendons, therefore reduce the risk of CTS.

 Back Pain due to Long Sitting
 Back pain is among the most common physical complaints of American adults and a leading cause of lost job time. For office workers with computers, long sitting is not only the cause of back pain but also the wrong body mechanics such as bending forward too much which greatly increases the pressure on the spine and intervertebral discs, and also increase the tension of back extension muscles and tendons. These are more likely to cause serious back pain. Mild back pain without treatment can easily develop into chronic back pain. We suggest computer related workers to extend their back and neck every half an hours and walk around 5 minutes every hour to allow the proper blood flow into the tension areas of the back. In addition, be sure to use the right body mechanics during the work.

Computer Vision Syndrome
 Staring at a computer monitor for hours has become a part of the modern workday, and it also puts a real strain on our eyes causing a disease called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). Research shows somewhere between 50% and 90% of people who work at a computer screen have at least some symptoms of eye trouble. CVS symptoms are blurred vision, double vision, dry and red eyes, eye irritation, headaches, neck and back pain. Over time if not treated, CVS can easily lead to more serious eye diseases like farsightedness and astigmatism. We suggest the following: cut the glare by change the lighting around you; rearrange your desk to make your monitor slightly below your eye level and about 20-28 inches away from your face; give your eye a break by look away from the screen every 20 minutes also; Adjust the brightness, contrast and font size until you find the best settings for your vision.

Computer Neck Pain
 Working a long time in front of a computer makes our neck immobilized, long time constant tension in the muscles and tendons causes poor circulation of the area, which may lead to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis causes cartilage between the vertebrae to deteriorate forming bone spurs that affect joint motion and cause pain. If the nerves are compressed, pain in neck and shoulders, numbness, tingling and weakness in arms may appear. The worst could be the cervical degeneration compressing the carotid artery causing abnormal blood supply to the brain, therefore headache, dizziness, and memory loss will show up.

A 35 year old female patient had been struggling with constant, debilitating migraine headaches for many months.  They caused extreme fatigue, and were ruling her life. She was unable to keep up with household chores, or enjoy her family or her life. After seeing many a neurologist, and many other doctors, she had lost hope of regaining her life. Recommended Way to Eat: Cook celery with less oil and salt, otherwise it will undermine the hypotensive effects of celery. Celery can also be blanched for salad or juiced to drink.

Blood Circulation Catalyst: Black Beans

Black beans are rich in anthocyanin, which can clean free radicals, lower cholesterol and promote blood circulation. Additionally anthocyanin has eye protection function.

Recommended Way to Eat: anthocyanin is more stable in acidic conditions, therefore soaking in vinegar is helpful to the absorption of the nutrients in black beans. Stir fry the black beans first, let them cool, then soak the black beans in the vinegar, be sure to let the vinegar covers the black bean and left about 1/3 of the space for black beans to expand. Cover the pan and wait for the black beans to expand. After the black beans are fully expanded, the black beans are ready to eat. Black beans can also be used to make bean milk or bean congee.

Vascular Purification Agent: Kelp

Kelp is not only with high iodine, and also rich in dietary fiber and pectin. Kelp pectin can combine blood toxins such as heavy metal to detox and clean the blood.

Recommended Way to Eat: After soaking in the water, kelp can be made seaweed salad. Since the kelp has the cooling property, it is recommended that seaweed combines with braised bean curd in high temperature for the cold and weak people to eat.

Thrombolytic Agent: Natto

Natto is made from soy beans by bacillus natto fermented soy products. Researchers confirmed that the nattokinase in natto can dissolve blood clots and prevent diseases such as myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction. In addition, natto contains high soy isoflavone, zinc and vitamin K, which can not only improve estrogen but also can help menopausal symptoms and prevent osteoporosis.

Recommended Way to Eat: In order to maintain the activities of nattokinase, natto must be consumed fresh and cold. Natto cannot be heated. In order to keep natto good for cardiovascular health, natto is not advised to be consumed with large amount of oil or meat.

Experts believe that life circle has five stages:
